Blizzard’s Battle.net: A Unique Player in the Gaming Storefront Landscape
The Unique Approach of Battle.net: A Curated Selection of Quality Games
When it comes to online gaming storefronts, Battle.net has carved out its niche by taking a different approach. Instead of trying to compete with giants like Steam or Epic Game Store, Blizzard’s Battle.net focuses on offering a carefully curated selection of games tailored to their dedicated audience.
Blizzard’s senior vice president, Andrew Guerrero, emphasized this point in an interview at BlizzCon, stating that Battle.net is not aiming to be a platform with an overwhelming number of games. Instead, it strives to provide top-tier quality experiences that align with the preferences of their player base.
One of the key aspects of Battle.net’s strategy is to offer games that complement Blizzard’s own titles. This was highlighted when it was announced that Cyberpunk 2077 would be joining The Witcher 3 on the platform. The focus is on providing games that Blizzard players would love, creating a curated collection rather than an endless library.
It’s clear that Battle.net is not looking to constantly add new games to its roster like some other storefronts. While the platform has streamlined its publishing process to accommodate select third-party games, the emphasis remains on maintaining a smaller, but high-quality, selection.
Despite this curated approach, Battle.net still manages to surprise players with unique offerings. For example, the collaboration between Blizzard and CD Projekt Red resulted in a Geralt crossover skin for Diablo 4 barbarians, available through pre-ordering The Witcher 3’s upcoming DLC on Battle.net.
While some may find it unusual to discover a game like The Witcher 3 on a platform primarily known for Blizzard games, it showcases Battle.net’s commitment to providing diverse and engaging experiences for its players.
In a gaming landscape dominated by mega-platforms, Battle.net’s focus on quality over quantity sets it apart. By offering a handpicked selection of games that resonate with their audience, Blizzard has created a unique space for players to enjoy top-tier gaming experiences.
