2026 GWM Cannon Hi4-T PHEV Ute: A Detailed Look at the Soon-to-Come BYD Shark 6 Hunting Expedition in Australia
GWM has unveiled the GWM Cannon Hi4-T plug-in hybrid (PHEV) ute at the Beijing motor show, with plans for it to arrive in Australia later this year. This new model, which will compete with the BYD Shark 6 and Ford Ranger PHEV, is set to launch in the third quarter of 2026.
The Cannon Hi4-T is positioned below the existing Cannon Alpha PHEV, offering a smaller size compared to its predecessor. Interestingly, the spare tire of the Cannon Hi4-T is placed underneath the vehicle, allowing for a ground clearance of 220mm.
In China, GWM will offer the Cannon Hi4-T in both passenger and commercial versions. The commercial variant features a longer wheelbase pickup body style, which will not be available in the Australian market.
Powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain borrowed from the Tank range of off-road SUVs, the Cannon Hi4-T boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine generating 180kW and 380Nm of torque. Additionally, it features a 130kW/495Nm front electric motor, resulting in total system outputs of 310kW and 750Nm.
The vehicle comes equipped with a nine-speed hybrid automatic transmission and a 33.1kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, offering an NEDC electric range of 118km and a combined range of 1017km.
One of the standout features of the Cannon Hi4-T is its fast-charging capability, allowing for a 30-80% battery charge in just 18 minutes. It also offers vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability, enabling users to power small appliances or tools.
Inside, the cabin of the Cannon Hi4-T features a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch touchscreen running GWM’s latest Coffee 3 infotainment system. Additionally, the vehicle includes a camp mode and a sentinel mode for enhanced safety monitoring.
With the introduction of the Cannon Hi4-T, GWM will be one of the few automakers offering two different plug-in hybrid dual-cab utes in the market. The pricing is expected to be competitive, with the larger Cannon Alpha Hi4-T PHEV currently available from $54,490 drive-away.
In 2025, PHEVs experienced significant growth in the Australian new car market, with GWM contributing to this trend with models like the BYD Shark 6 and Sealion 6. GWM aims to increase its sales volume in Australia and break into the top five best-selling brands.
Overall, GWM has shown strong performance in the Australian market, positioning itself as a key player in the PHEV segment. The company’s growth trajectory indicates potential for further success in the coming years.
