Exploring the Evolution of Land Rover and Range Rover Ownership: A Retrospective

Who Owns Range Rover and Land Rover: A Comprehensive History
One common question that often pops up on the internet revolves around the ownership of Range Rover and Land Rover. It is important to note that Land Rover plays a significant role in the manufacturing of Range Rover models.
The Early Years: 1970s to 1978
The history of these iconic brands dates back to the 1970s when British Leyland Motors LTD initially produced the Range Rover vehicles. The association continued until 1978 when the SUV division decided to differentiate itself by adopting the Land Rover name.
Roots of Innovation: 1948 to 1967
The roots of the brand can be traced back to Warwickshire, England, where the Rover name first emerged. During this period, the Land Rover was developed under the Rover umbrella, marking a pivotal moment in the brand’s evolution until 1967.
Corporate Evolution: 1967 to 2000
From 1967 to 1988, Land Rover became a part of the state-owned British Leyland Motor Corporation, before undergoing significant changes as British Leyland Motors disbanded in 1988. British Aerospace subsequently acquired the Rover Group, which included Land Rover, from 1988 to 1994.
BMW entered the picture in 1994, taking ownership of the Rover Group and thereby controlling Land Rover. This period saw the development of key models such as the Freelander and the second-generation Range Rover.
Recent Ownership Changes: 2000 to Present
In the early 2000s, Ford Motor Company acquired Land Rover from BMW, ushering in a new era for the brand. Subsequently, Tata Motors made a notable move by purchasing Jaguar and Land Rover in 2008, leading to their amalgamation into Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) by 2013.
By 2023, JLR had solidified its brand strategy, emphasizing the distinct identity of Range Rover, Defender, Discovery, and Jaguar as separate entities under the JLR umbrella.
