GWM’s Decision to Drop Another Hybrid Option in Australia: Preparing for a New, Powerful Diesel Model

GWM axing another hybrid option in Australia as it readies new, larger diesel

GWM is making a bold move in 2026 by discontinuing its hybrid vehicle, the Tank 500, and introducing a diesel alternative. This decision may seem unconventional, but it reflects the company’s commitment to innovation and adaptability in the ever-evolving automotive market.

The remaining stock of the Tank 500 hybrid is limited to the blacked-out Vanta version and the Ultra plug-in hybrid (PHEV). With only the top-tier variants available, priced at $74,490 and $76,990 drive-away, GWM is streamlining its offerings to focus on the upcoming diesel model.

In response to the growing demand for diesel-powered vehicles, GWM will equip its Tank 500 SUV, positioned as a competitor to the Toyota Prado, with a new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel engine in the third quarter of 2026. This engine is designed to enhance performance and driveability, rivalling similar models like the Ford Ranger and Everest.

Despite featuring fewer cylinders than its competitors, the diesel engine offers impressive torque (620Nm) and power (170kW), coming close to the hybrid variant’s total system outputs of 255kW and 648Nm. Paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and a four-wheel drive system, the diesel Tank 500 promises an exhilarating driving experience.

GWM is committed to sustainability and efficiency, with the diesel engine expected to deliver a five per cent improvement in fuel consumption compared to the Cannon Alpha’s 2.4-litre turbo-diesel engine. Additionally, the diesel variant aims to reduce the 0-100km/h acceleration time by 20 per cent without compromising emissions levels.

The decision to discontinue the Tank 500 hybrid aligns with GWM’s strategy to simplify its powertrain lineup and focus on offering a wide range of powertrain options across its vehicle range. With plans to introduce diesel hybrid and diesel plug-in hybrid powertrains in the future, GWM aims to cater to diverse customer preferences and market demands.

Looking ahead, GWM is poised to introduce electrified diesel powertrains in China in 2027, with potential plans to bring these technologies to the Australian market. These powertrains are versatile and can be integrated with GWM’s existing range of turbo-diesel engines, offering customers a variety of efficient and sustainable options.

As GWM continues to expand its lineup and evolve its powertrain offerings, the Tank 500 remains a key player in the company’s portfolio. While facing challenges in the market, GWM is strategically positioning itself for future growth and success. With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and customer satisfaction, GWM is poised to make a significant impact in the automotive industry.
