Amazon Web Services Outage: What Happened and Why?

An internal issue within Amazon Web Services’ infrastructure caused a massive outage early Monday, affecting major sites and services. The root cause was identified as an internal subsystem responsible for monitoring the network load balancers.

Impacting sites like Facebook, Coinbase, and Amazon, as well as services such as check-in kiosks at LaGuardia Airport, the outage led to connectivity and API recovery for AWS services.

Dr. Aybars Tuncdogan, an associate professor at King’s College London, warned that a deliberate attack targeting a similar vulnerability could result in even more significant damage.

The outage originated in Amazon’s Northern Virginia region, known for previous disruptions in 2017, 2021, and 2023. AWS initially attributed the issue to a DNS resolution problem with DynamoDB.

This incident highlighted the importance of redundancy in case of AWS outages, with the need for diversified platforms and providers to prevent widespread disruptions.

Tuncodgan emphasized the risks of a tech monoculture and suggested decentralizing and diversifying infrastructure to enhance resilience against future outages or attacks.

Vaibhav Tupe from IEEE recommended cloud service providers isolate critical networking components to prevent cascading failures, promoting the adoption of multi-cloud and multi-region architectures for enhanced resilience.
