Microsoft has unveiled refreshed versions of its popular Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch devices, featuring Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon X2 Plus chips. While the design and hardware features remain largely unchanged from last year, the new devices boast faster and more advanced chips, resulting in improved performance and higher price tags.

The starting prices for these devices have seen a significant increase compared to their predecessors. The 12-inch Surface Pro now starts at $1,149.99, up from $799.99, while the 13-inch Surface Laptop is priced at $1,199.99, compared to $899.99. One notable change is the absence of an 8GB base model, with both devices now starting at 16GB of RAM and offering configurations of up to 24GB.

Despite the increase in pricing, Microsoft promises that the new six-core Snapdragon X2 Plus chips deliver up to 18% more efficient battery performance, over 60% faster graphics performance, and up to 95% faster local AI inferencing on the built-in NPU.

The upgraded chips translate to better battery life and performance on the devices. The Surface Pro 12-inch offers an additional hour of web browsing, totaling up to 13 hours, while the Surface Laptop 13-inch provides two extra hours of web browsing, reaching up to 18 hours in total.

Both models retain their display specifications from the previous year, with the Surface Pro 12-inch featuring a 2196 x 1464 (220 PPI) LCD display running at up to 90Hz, and the Surface Laptop 13-inch sporting a 1920 x 1280 (178 PPI) display at 60Hz. However, both displays have been upgraded to 500 nits of brightness.

In terms of ports, both devices offer two USB-C 3.2 ports, with the Surface Laptop 13-inch also including a USB-A 3.2 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Additionally, they support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 connectivity.

Microsoft has not introduced haptic trackpads on these updated models, despite the new haptic features in Windows 11. However, the company is releasing a second edition of the Surface Mouse with integrated haptics.

Both the Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch will be available in black, platinum silver, and violet color options. Commercial customers can also purchase these devices, with the Surface Pro 12-inch offering an optional 5G configuration.
