Amazon launches Alexa for Shopping as Rufus moves behind the scenes

Amazon Enhances Shopping Experience with Alexa Integration

Amazon has recently launched Alexa for Shopping, a new feature that integrates its Rufus shopping chatbot with Alexa+ across various platforms including the Amazon app, website, and Echo Show devices. This innovative assistant is designed to provide customers with a seamless shopping experience by offering product information, price comparisons, shopping reminders, and support for scheduled shopping actions and automated purchases.

According to Amazon, Alexa for Shopping combines the product expertise of Rufus with the personalized context of Alexa+, resulting in a highly efficient and user-friendly shopping assistant. In 2025, Rufus assisted over 300 million customers in researching, comparing, and purchasing products.

Reports from GeekWire indicate that Amazon is phasing out the Rufus name from its shopping interface while retaining its functionality behind the scenes. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy mentioned that Rufus’s monthly active users saw a significant increase of over 115%, with engagement rising by nearly 400% year over year.

With the new feature, customers can now ask shopping-related questions directly through Amazon’s main search bar, eliminating the need for a separate chatbot window. Users can seek product recommendations, inquire about past purchases, or receive advice tailored to their specific shopping needs.

Amazon has provided examples of queries that customers can ask, such as “What’s a good skincare routine for men?” and “When did I last order AA batteries?” The assistant utilizes data from Amazon’s platform to deliver accurate and relevant responses.

Alexa for Shopping leverages information from a customer’s Amazon activity and interactions with Alexa to offer personalized recommendations and support various shopping tasks. The assistant can compare products, provide AI-generated summaries, and showcase overviews in search results.

Price Tracking and Automated Shopping Features

The assistant enables users to track price changes for selected items over a one-year period. Customers can access a detailed price history on product pages or by simply asking the assistant for information.

In addition, Alexa for Shopping can create shopping guides for significant purchases, complete with product comparisons, pricing details, and reviews sourced from Amazon and other online platforms.

Customers can schedule shopping actions, set reminders for birthdays or restocking household items, and establish conditions for automated purchases. For instance, the assistant can add an item to the cart if it reaches a specified price and has not been purchased within a designated time frame.

Furthermore, the assistant can retrieve past orders, suggest frequently purchased items, and allow users to manage personal preferences such as family details, interests, and dietary needs.

Through the Shop Direct feature, Alexa for Shopping can showcase products from external online stores, with the Buy for Me agentic AI capability facilitating purchases using the customer’s primary address and payment method.

Echo Show Expands Shopping Capabilities

Amazon has also extended full-store shopping access to Echo Show devices, enabling users to browse, search, and make purchases using voice commands, touch screen interactions, or a combination of both.

This enhanced shopping experience is currently available for Alexa+ customers on Echo Show 15 and Echo Show 21, with support for additional devices expected in the future.

Amazon’s first-quarter 2026 results highlighted the company’s investments in AI, with a notable increase in property and equipment purchases primarily attributed to AI initiatives. Rajiv Mehta, Amazon’s vice president of conversational shopping, emphasized that the assistant can seamlessly transition customer preferences, past purchases, and conversations across various devices.
