Rideshare Stimulator finally gets its genAI disclosure after much Saber-rattling, and it turns out the game also uses the tech for in-game music

The Controversy Surrounding Rideshare Stimulator’s Use of Generative AI

A recent update on the Steam page for Unigine’s Rideshare Stimulator has sparked a heated debate in the gaming community. The update includes a disclosure about the game’s use of generative AI, following a public spat between the game’s former writer, Stella Sacco, and Saber Interactive CEO Matthew Karch.

In case you missed the drama, Sacco, who was the lead writer at Saber from July 2023 to July 2024, raised concerns about the game’s development process. She claimed that Saber had replaced her with ChatGPT, a generative AI tool, midway through the game’s development. Specifically, Sacco mentioned that the game utilized AI for passenger voices.

Saber quickly responded, stating that they did not replace any writers with AI for Rideshare Stimulator. They emphasized that the game’s story was crafted entirely by real people and that no employees were at risk of being replaced by AI. However, they did acknowledge the use of AI in the game’s experimental free-ride mode to ensure an infinite number of passengers.

Despite Saber’s defense, the lack of disclosure about the AI usage on the game’s Steam page raised concerns about compliance with Valve’s content policies. Saber explained that the AI was necessary to prevent passengers from becoming predictable in the free-ride mode.

Sacco stood by her claims, alleging that she was removed from the project in favor of using AI-generated text, including planned live updates. She also revealed that there was internal resistance against AI usage but that the decision was driven by marketing motivations.

Karch, the Saber CEO, entered the fray with a defensive statement, highlighting the benefits of AI usage in enhancing the game experience. He dismissed Sacco’s claims and hinted at her termination for various reasons. The controversy escalated as both parties exchanged accusations and criticisms publicly.

Further discussions revealed the challenges and costs associated with integrating generative AI into the game. Karch explained the rationale behind the decision and emphasized the importance of staying ahead in the rapidly evolving gaming industry.

Amidst the controversy, the use of generative AI in Rideshare Stimulator raised broader concerns about the industry’s adoption of AI technology. Executives’ views on AI as a means to cut costs and optimize processes have fueled debates about its impact on the workforce.

Finally, the long-awaited disclosure on the Rideshare Stimulator Steam page shed light on the extensive use of AI in the game, including AI-generated music. The full disclosure outlined the various aspects of AI integration in the game, emphasizing the combination of human creativity and AI innovation.

The main Campaign story, characters, and dialogue are written by a team of human writers. AI tools are used for voice generation and some localization.

The optional Free Ride mode includes AI-generated passenger missions and localized dialogue. Free Ride mode is separate from the main Campaign and can be skipped by players who prefer to experience only human-written narrative content.

The game also includes a mix of radio stations featuring human-made music and AI-generated music. Stations containing AI-generated music are clearly labeled as such in the game.
