Revolutionizing User Interfaces with iOS 27 & macOS Golden Gate Fix: The Liquid Glass Experience

WWDC26 25 Liquid Glass answer call

Apple introduced Liquid Glass, a new translucent design language, last year, which received a lukewarm reception. While the design was implemented across the entire OS 26 software lineup, Mac users were particularly unhappy with the change. Complaints flooded social media platforms, with some users expressing their reluctance to update to macOS 26 due to Liquid Glass. Even loyal Mac fans who were initially optimistic about the new design eventually grew to dislike many of Apple’s UI changes.

Responding to the feedback, Apple has made significant improvements to Liquid Glass in iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate, addressing the issues raised by users.

iOS 27 Updates

iOS 27 introduces a new Liquid Glass slider for customizing transparency levels, aiming to enhance the readability of content and controls. The icons now feature a sharper, more defined appearance. Additionally, menus, buttons, and other on-screen elements gain depth through new refraction features, while the Home Screen supports larger widgets.

These changes reflect Apple’s efforts to address the criticisms of the original Liquid Glass design.

The update includes fine-tuning of how Liquid Glass handles content and the iOS interface, with enhancements such as a darkened edge around elements and brighter specular highlights for improved readability and visual separation.

A key feature to address user complaints is the Transparency control in the Settings app, allowing users to adjust the transparency level across the system.

Developers will benefit from automatic optimization of their apps for iOS 27, without the need for code changes. The update also ensures legibility and contrast when content scrolls under floating bars in apps.

macOS 27 Golden Gate Enhancements

In response to Mac users’ criticisms, Apple has made changes to how Liquid Glass is implemented in macOS 27.

Transparency Controls

Similar to iOS 27, macOS 27 features a Liquid Glass slider for granular control over transparency levels, improving readability and visual depth. Third-party macOS apps will automatically benefit from these enhancements.

Developers also gain access to an API for surfacing icons in menus, enhancing user interaction.

Toolbars and Windows

Uniform toolbars and consistent window design across apps improve legibility and visual coherence. Opacity changes, window shadows, and sidebar adjustments enhance the user experience.

Sidebars

Edge-to-edge sidebars create a less distracting and more uniform design, with colorful icons improving visual appeal.

Icon Enhancements

Mac icons now feature multiple layers of Liquid Glass, enhancing detail and sharpness in all modes. Icon usage in menu bar items facilitates easy access to common actions.

HDR Integration

HDR technology is utilized to add depth and dimension to the Golden Gate interface.

Availability

The initial betas of iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate are available for developers, with a public beta scheduled for a July release. The wide public release is expected in early fall.
