Subnautica: Settlement Reached as CEO Steps Down
The Subnautica 2 Legal Dispute: A Settlement Reached
After a prolonged legal battle, the Subnautica 2 legal dispute between publishers Krafton and the three Unknown Worlds leaders has finally come to a resolution. The dispute, which began with the firing of the three leaders last year, has culminated in a settlement agreement.
One of the key figures in the dispute, Unknown Worlds CEO Ted Gill, was reinstated to his position following a judge’s order in March. However, with the settlement now reached, Gill has made the decision to voluntarily step down from his role.
The news of the settlement was first reported by Bloomberg, who revealed that both parties have agreed to dismiss their legal actions. As part of the settlement, Krafton has agreed to pay bonuses to the developers of Subnautica 2.
Gill has stated that the developers of Subnautica 2 will now receive “significantly more” compensation than originally outlined in Krafton’s acquisition agreement. Originally, bonuses were only set to go to Gill, along with fellow founders Charlie Cleveland and Max McGuire, and other staff who were part of the studio at the time of the acquisition in 2021. However, the bonuses will now be extended to include more recent staff members, with additional incentives planned as the game’s early access updates continue to roll out.
In light of these developments, Gill has decided to step down from his position, stating that “new leadership is the best way for the studio to move forward.” Both Gill and Krafton have mutually agreed to part ways now that the legal disputes have been settled and Subnautica 2 is in early access.
Gill has indicated that a new leader from outside both Krafton and Unknown Worlds will be sought to replace him. Perhaps a new boss like the Collector Leviathan could bring a fresh perspective to the studio. Krafton has affirmed that Unknown Worlds will remain in charge of the development of Subnautica 2, with the publishers offering support for the success of the game.
As the dust settles on the Subnautica 2 legal dispute, it is clear that this chapter in the studio’s history has come to a close. The twists and turns of the past year have certainly made for an intriguing story, but now it is time for the studio to focus on the future and the continued success of Subnautica 2.
