Cursor’s Major Expansion in India: Tailoring Prices for Success Amidst SpaceX Acquisition
Cursor Launches India-Specific Subscription Plan
Cursor, an AI coding startup expected to be acquired by SpaceX soon, is expanding its presence in India by introducing its first country-specific subscription plan. The new plan, called Cursor Start, is priced at ₹649 a month (approximately $7), significantly lower than Cursor’s standard $20-a-month Pro subscription.
The move comes as Cursor sees India as a key market for its business, with the country already being its third-largest market globally. The startup has witnessed a significant increase in its user base in India, making it the ideal market to launch a localized pricing model. Simon Green, Cursor’s head of Asia-Pacific and Japan, highlighted India’s technical competency and deep pool of software engineering talent as key factors in this decision.
India has emerged as one of the largest software developer hubs globally, attracting attention from companies like GitHub. Cursor’s new subscription plan, Cursor Start, offers access to advanced AI models and tools, catering to developers who require more AI-assisted coding capacity than the free tier but may not need the full Pro subscription.
The plan, billed in Indian rupees, supports multiple payment methods, including credit and debit cards, as well as India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Cursor has implemented measures to ensure that the India-specific subscription is available only to individual users in the country and not accessible through VPNs.
Cursor’s pricing strategy aligns with industry trends, with other AI companies like OpenAI and Anthropic also introducing India-specific plans. Green hinted at the possibility of expanding the localized pricing model to other markets if successful.
Additionally, Cursor is ramping up its presence in India through new hires and local sales efforts. The company sees opportunities in sectors like banking and large enterprises as it expands its enterprise push in the country.
Cursor’s India expansion coincides with its impending acquisition by SpaceX, with the deal expected to close in Q3. Green emphasized that Cursor will continue to operate independently until the transaction is finalized, leveraging SpaceX’s presence in India through Starlink to accelerate its growth post-acquisition.
