Blizzard is making a significant change to Overwatch 2 by reverting it back to the original Overwatch on February 10th. This decision is reminiscent of when Prince decided to go back to being called Prince after using an unpronounceable symbol as his name. As part of this soft reboot, Overwatch will now focus more on storytelling, with a narrative arc unfolding throughout each season. Additionally, the game will introduce 10 new heroes over the course of the year, with the first five being added alongside the reboot.

It seems that Overwatch may have felt some competition from Marvel Rivals, prompting Blizzard to take this fresh approach that harks back to the game’s early days. Each story arc will kick off with a cinematic and then progress through motion comics, in-game events, new voice lines, animated hero trailers, and short stories.

The five new heroes introduced are Domina, Emre, Mizuki, Anran, and Jetpack Cat, each playing a crucial role in the unfolding narrative.

Joining the Talon forces, led by Vendetta, is Domina, who serves as a poke tank with abilities like a hard-light barrier, sonic repulsors, and an imprisoning barrier ultimate. Emre, a former Overwatch Strike Team member who underwent cybernetic modifications and now embodies a fast-paced run-and-gun damage style. Mizuki, a new support hero with spinning blades, a healing hat, and a healing sanctuary.

On the Overwatch side, Anran is introduced as a damage dealer with fiery projectiles, expected to be popular for cosmetic items. She will be available from February 5th through a Hero Trial. Then there’s Jetpack Cat, a ginger cat riding a jetpack with abilities like Biotic Pawjectiles, healing Purr, and the ultimate ability to catnap. Jetpack Cat is sure to evoke guilt in pet owners for shooting at her.

The three main character classes (Tank, Damage, Support) will remain the same but will be further divided into sub-roles to offer unique buffs:

TANK

  • BRUISER: Reduces critical damage received and gains movement speed at critical health.
  • INITIATOR: Staying airborne lightly heals you.
  • STALWART: Reduces knockbacks and slows received.

DAMAGE

  • SHARPSHOOTER: Critical hits reduce movement ability cooldowns.
  • FLANKER: Health packs restore more health.
  • SPECIALIST: Eliminating an enemy briefly increases reload speed.
  • RECON: Detect enemies below half health through walls after damaging them.

SUPPORT

  • TACTICIAN: Gain excess ultimate charge that carries over after using your ultimate ability.
  • MEDIC: Healing allies with your weapon also heals you.
  • SURVIVOR: Using a movement ability activates passive health regeneration.

Season 1 will introduce a new meta event that will span five weeks, prompting players to choose between Talon and Overwatch and fight for their chosen side. Weekly missions will further the lore of the battle and allow players to earn numerous lootboxes.

Lastly, there is a new main menu design that has received mixed reviews, resembling a mobile free-to-play game. While the old menus had a minimalist and clear aesthetic, the new design aims for a different look.
