Peak XV Partners, a prominent venture capital firm with a focus on markets such as India and Southeast Asia and managing assets exceeding $10 billion, has expanded its investment per startup through Surge, its seed-stage investing platform. The firm has recently introduced a new cohort comprising 18 companies.

Within this cohort, at least three companies had already secured external funding, including from Peak XV, prior to joining Surge. This latest group, known as Surge 12, marks the firm’s increased investment ceiling of up to $5 million per company, up from the previous $3 million limit. Peak XV has invested over $50 million across the cohort, which collectively has raised more than $90 million in seed funding. While the median investment per company has also risen, the specific figure remains undisclosed.

Rajan Anandan, managing director at Peak XV, emphasized the heightened standards for Series A fundraising and the emergence of capital-intensive companies, particularly in deeptech, securing larger rounds at the seed stage. Anandan highlighted Surge’s global expansion, with the latest cohort featuring founders and companies spanning from San Francisco to Sydney. Notably, only five of the 18 startups in Surge 12 are focused on the Indian market, with the majority based in India. The rest target global markets, underscoring the distinction between where the companies originate and where they anticipate customer engagement.

Since its inception in 2019 under the name Sequoia Capital India and Southeast Asia, Surge has supported over 180 startups founded by entrepreneurs representing more than 18 nationalities. Notably, the top 10 companies from these cohorts collectively generate more than $1 billion in annual revenue.

Anandan positioned Surge as Peak XV’s primary avenue for seed-stage investments, with the firm continuing to invest as companies progress through subsequent funding rounds. The founders supported by Surge typically include repeat entrepreneurs, seasoned operators, and highly specialized technical founders. An estimated 50% to 60% of a standard cohort comprises individuals transitioning from operational roles at established tech companies.

The startups in this cohort span various sectors such as AI, robotics, space, consumer products, healthcare, music, and fintech, offering solutions ranging from AI safety and personal computing to autonomous robots tailored for underground pipelines and satellites engineered to detect radio-frequency signals from orbit.

The Surge 12 cohort features a diverse array of startups, including Alma, August AI, Ditto, GameStock, HiLoop, Hoola Health, Kello, Kindling, Puralink, Reinforce Labs, Riffle, Rosella, Tribe Money, ULOOK, and Wingit. Notably, three startups within the cohort are currently undisclosed, operating in education, applied AI, and medical products.
