Apple Working on Adding Support for Third-Party Chatbots in CarPlay

Apple is reportedly working on a new update for CarPlay that will allow users to use third-party chatbots instead of Siri. According to Bloomberg, this update will enable CarPlay users to access chatbots from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and other providers directly through their car’s voice control system. Previously, users had to go through their iPhone to access third-party chatbots, but this new feature will streamline the process and make it more convenient for users.

Limitations of the New Feature

Despite the upcoming support for third-party chatbots, Apple will not allow users to replace the Siri button on CarPlay or the wake word that activates Siri. This means that users will still need to manually open their preferred chatbot’s app to use it. However, developers will have the option to set their apps to automatically start voice mode when opened, which could improve the overall user experience.

Expected Rollout and Updates

The addition of third-party chatbots in CarPlay is rumored to be rolled out within the coming months, although Apple has not officially announced this update yet. This new feature follows Apple’s recent announcement that Google Gemini will power an updated version of Siri, scheduled to be released later this year. By incorporating third-party chatbots into CarPlay, Apple aims to enhance the voice control capabilities of its in-car system and provide users with more options for interacting with their devices while driving.
