Recently, there was a significant supply chain breach involving stolen confidential Apple specifications from Tata Electronics in India. While the extent of the compromised Apple data was initially unclear, a closer examination by AppleInsider has confirmed that some unreleased product specifications were indeed part of the leak.

To provide context, a ransomware group known as World Leaks claimed to have accessed over 200,000 files totaling more than 630 GB of data from Tata. Although Tata acknowledged a cybersecurity incident, they did not disclose the exact amount of data taken or which customers were impacted. However, sources have indicated that the electronics manufacturer received a ransom demand.

Tata Electronics is the largest Apple supplier in India based on workforce, although it is overshadowed by Foxconn in terms of production volume. In addition to Apple, Tata also supplies companies like Tesla, Intel, and Qualcomm, indicating that the stolen data extended beyond Apple-related schematics.

Upon reviewing a sample of the leaked files, TechCrunch noted that many of them seemed to be Apple supplier specifications and Tesla manufacturing documents. While the authenticity of the files could not be independently verified, AppleInsider conducted a detailed analysis and confirmed the legitimacy of at least some of the data provided by the ransomware group.

It is important to note that the leaked information does not include highly confidential details about upcoming Apple projects like the rumored 20th-anniversary iPhone or smart glasses. However, one significant product line that is currently in the supply chain spotlight is the iPhone 18 Pro models.

As the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to undergo minor design updates and are slated for release in September, suppliers like Tata have already begun preparations for mass production. Therefore, it is unsurprising that their systems contain confidential documents related to these devices and their components.

The leaked schematics provide detailed board layouts for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, including information on individual chips and their respective suppliers. Various layers of the logic boards are meticulously detailed and presented from multiple angles.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are anticipated to feature incremental design changes, with no significant revelations in the leaked files. Even details such as color options have been redacted. Despite the cybersecurity breach at Tata, the company’s proactive security measures deserve recognition, especially when compared to practices at Foxconn, as highlighted by AppleInsider.

While the internal specifications revealed in the leaked documents offer insights into the upcoming models, they largely confirm existing expectations, such as the presence of an A20 Pro chip for the main processor and the rumored C2 modem chip (code-named Ganymede).

Although the inclusion of the A20 Pro chip was anticipated, the mention of an enhanced Image Signal Processor (ISP) and “improved display security” adds to the intrigue. The revelation of the C2 modem chip, while likely, was not previously confirmed, making this leak a significant development.

Despite some references to a foldable iPhone with the codename V68, specific details remain scarce. The leaked information on the iPhone 18 Pro models is relatively limited compared to the extensive specifications available for existing models like the iPhone 17 Pro and the base iPhone 15.

The released files represent only a fraction of the stolen data, serving as a demonstration of the hackers’ capabilities. It is possible that more substantial information is being withheld for leverage, as the hackers’ primary objective is likely a ransom payment to prevent further data leaks. The impending launch of the iPhone 18 Pro in less than three months renders these developments significant primarily for Apple and its supply chain partners.
