Revolutionary BMW Art Car Finds New Home in Romania

BMW’s Art Car program began in 1975 with Alexander Calder’s iconic BMW 3.0 CSL, currently on display at Hotel Caro in Bucharest until May 15. This marked the start of a series that has grown to include 20 cars, featuring renowned artists such as Warhol, Hockney, Koons, and most recently Julie Mehretu, whose M Hybrid V8 set a speed record at Le Mans.

Interestingly, Romania has a special connection to the BMW Art Car story that many are unaware of. Calder, the artist behind the first Art Car, was inspired by the work of Romanian sculptor Brâncuși. Additionally, Ileana Sonnabend, a key figure in selecting early Art Car artists, was born in Bucharest, further solidifying the country’s ties to this unique art project.

The inception of the BMW Art Car program can be traced back to Hervé Poulain’s idea to have an artist paint his race car for Le Mans. Calder, known for his mobile sculptures, took on the challenge and transformed the 3.0 CSL with vibrant primary colors. Despite not winning the race, the project captured the imagination of many and laid the foundation for a lasting legacy.

Over the years, the Art Car series has featured a diverse range of artists, each bringing their unique vision to BMW’s racing cars. From Frank Stella to Andy Warhol and Julie Mehretu, these collaborations have resulted in striking designs that blur the lines between art and performance. Some Art Cars have even competed in races, adding an exciting dimension to the project.

The BMW 3.0 CSL, affectionately called the “Batmobile” for its aggressive styling, remains one of BMW Motorsport’s most iconic cars. Calder’s colorful interpretation of the car at Le Mans in 1975 may not have finished the race, but it left a lasting impression on the art and automotive worlds.
