Exploring the Upcoming Changes to the BMW M5 Touring

BMW is gearing up for a major aesthetic overhaul across its lineup, with the upcoming iX3 leading the charge in design revolution. By late 2027, around 40 models are expected to adopt the Neue Klasse aesthetic. This transformation will not only impact future releases but also current models, including the facelifted M5.

Key Details About the Facelifted M5 Touring

  • Recent spy shots from Sweden capture the camouflaged BMW M5 Touring undergoing testing in snowy conditions.
  • The G99 model is set to receive significant changes primarily at the front, aligning its appearance with the upcoming i3 sedan.
  • Expected to debut alongside the G90 M5 Sedan in mid-2027, the facelifted version will introduce subtle yet impactful design updates.

The latest images of the G99 prototype reveal a US-spec M5 Touring with distinctive orange side reflectors on the front bumper. Notable modifications include a smaller grille with downsized kidneys and a horizontal slat, as well as redesigned headlights that no longer follow the hood shut line.

If you were anticipating a return to a V8-only powertrain, the current indications may disappoint you. The presence of a charging port flap suggests that the twin-turbo “S68” engine will continue to be paired with an electric motor in the new M5. However, observant enthusiasts may notice the absence of M-specific design elements on the mirrors, a departure from traditional styling cues.

Similar deviations from the norm have been observed in other upcoming M models, such as the electric M3 (ZA0) and the next gas-powered M3 (G84). The shift towards a cleaner aesthetic, in line with BMW’s Neue Klasse philosophy, may explain these design choices.

While the overall appearance of the M5 Touring prototype remains familiar, anticipated updates to the taillights and potential changes to mirror designs hint at a fresh direction for the model. However, certain features, like the fixed tailgate glass, are expected to remain unchanged.

Although sightings of facelifted M5 prototypes are becoming more frequent, the official debut of the updated G90/G99 models is likely still a considerable time away. With production slated to commence in mid-2027, enthusiasts will have to wait patiently for the unveiling of BMW’s latest iteration of the iconic M5 Touring.
