Fuel Prices Slashed in Australia: GST Deal Leads to Discounts at the Pump
Motorists to Enjoy 5.7 Cents Discount on Fuel Prices Nationwide
Motorists all over the country are set to benefit from a new discount of 5.7 cents per litre on fuel, thanks to an agreement between all states and territories to use revenue raised by the goods and services tax (GST).
This discount, effective immediately, will be funded by additional GST revenue generated by higher petrol prices, estimated at around $400 million, as confirmed by the National Cabinet.
According to the Australian Institute of Petroleum, fuel prices reached a peak of $2.59 per litre on average nationwide last week, with diesel prices averaging $3.21 per litre.
The recent reduction in fuel excise by the federal government, halving it from 52.6 cents per litre to 26.3 cents per litre, which came into effect on April 1, is complemented by this additional discount funded by GST revenue. Both measures are expected to remain in place until June 30.
Combined, these two initiatives will result in total savings of approximately 32 cents per litre, translating to a saving of $17.60 on a full 55-litre tank for popular petrol vehicles like the Toyota RAV4. For diesel vehicles such as the Ford Ranger, Australia’s top-selling model for the past three years, the savings amount to around $25.60 per tank.
Following the fuel excise cut, prices have already started to decrease, with daily average retail petrol prices dropping by 16.7 cents per litre and diesel prices by 15.0 cents per litre on April 1 compared to the previous day, according to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC).
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese anticipates that the full impact of these reductions on petrol prices will be seen in the coming weeks.
He stated, “This relief is already starting to show up in petrol prices, and we expect more to flow through in the next one to two weeks.”
The federal government has also implemented stage two of its emergency fuel strategy, which includes temporarily allowing lower fuel standards to facilitate increased fuel imports and underwriting fuel shipments to ensure a stable supply. There has been no mention of fuel rationing by the Prime Minister or Energy Minister Chris Bowen.
The government’s actions aim to alleviate the cost of living for Australians facing financial pressures, particularly at the petrol pump due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
