Sony’s flagship Xperia 1 phones have garnered a loyal following among tech enthusiasts. They are the only flagship devices that still come with microSD card slots, headphone jacks, and front-facing speakers, making them highly desirable.

In recent years, however, the popularity of the Xperia 1 series has started to decline. Sony’s cameras are lagging behind competitors like Vivo and Oppo, coupled with an outdated appearance and high price tags, indicating that the brand was struggling to keep up. Now, Sony has unveiled its 2026 flagship offering, the Xperia 1 VIII, with the aim of revitalizing its position in the market.

A fresh new look

The Sony Xperia 1 VIII represents a significant departure from the brand’s traditional design. The camera layout, reminiscent of traffic lights seen on Samsung Galaxy devices, has been replaced by a square module positioned on the left side of the phone with an angled side sloping down the frame.

A new texture called ‘ORE’, inspired by rough stone, has been introduced by Sony. This unique texture sets the phone apart from others in the market and reportedly provides a grippy feel, essential for using the phone without a case.

The color options have also been refreshed. In addition to the classic Graphite Black version, there are now Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold options available. All variants come with a built-in shutter button as standard.

Sony offers a translucent design case with a built-in stand that supports the phone in both landscape and portrait orientations, ensuring comfortable viewing for videos.

Enhancements and drawbacks in the camera department

As with any Sony flagship device, the focus is on the cameras. The major change this year is the replacement of the 85-170mm optical zoom with a 70mm-equivalent prime featuring a significantly larger sensor.

The new telephoto lens boasts a 48Mp 1/1.58-inch sensor, a notable upgrade from the previous 12Mp unit, promising better performance in low-light conditions and more natural bokeh effects.

However, the new telephoto lens lacks the super macro capabilities of its predecessor, with a minimum focus distance of 15cm compared to the previous 4cm. Nonetheless, the new lens offers full autofocus without the need for a dedicated macro mode, which could be seen as an improvement.

Additionally, the phone includes 16mm and 24mm equivalent ultrawide and main cameras, with Sony claiming that all three rear cameras can deliver impressive low-light performance comparable to that of a full-frame sensor in terms of noise reduction and dynamic range.

Sony has also made significant improvements to its camera software. The phone now combines multiple frames at a RAW sensor level, resulting in enhanced dynamic range, noise reduction, and more convincing portrait mode cutouts.

Notably, Sony has introduced a new AI camera assistant, a departure from its usual focus on enthusiasts. This feature analyzes scenes and suggests actions such as changing lenses, applying filters, or enabling portrait mode, aimed at assisting users in capturing aesthetically pleasing photos.

While the performance of the Xperia 1 VIII’s camera system compared to other top camera phones remains to be seen, the new AI assistant shows Sony’s commitment to innovation in this area.

Additional specifications, release date & pricing

The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip and comes with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage as standard, with the option to expand storage using a microSD card. The Native Gold color variant offers the option of 1TB storage.

Fortunately, the phone retains the headphone jack and front-facing speakers, maintaining features that are increasingly rare in flagship devices.

On the downside, the phone’s battery capacity remains at 5000mAh, with Sony claiming a one-hour improvement in video playback compared to the previous model. The charging speed remains at 30W, which may disappoint some users.

Sony’s decision to offer only four years of OS updates (along with six years of security updates) falls short compared to competitors like Samsung and Google.

Pricing for the Xperia 1 VIII starts at £1,399 in the UK and €1,499 in Europe for the 256GB model, placing it in a similar price range as its predecessor and above competitors like the Xiaomi 17 Ultra.

The Native Gold 1TB model is priced at £1,849 or €1,999, exclusively available through the official Sony store. Pre-orders are open with a release date set for June, and pre-order customers will receive a complimentary pair of Sony WH-1000XM6 headphones.
