BYD Atto 1: Cheap and cheerful new EV expected to get top safety marks

BYD Australia’s Atto 1 Electric Hatchback Set to Make Waves

BYD Australia is gearing up for the launch of its highly anticipated Atto 1 electric hatchback, which is poised to revolutionize the Australian electric vehicle (EV) market. With a starting price of just $25,000, the Atto 1 is expected to be the most affordable EV in the country when it hits showrooms next month. Despite its budget-friendly price tag, BYD is confident that the Atto 1 will excel in safety, thanks to its impressive performance in Euro NCAP testing.

The 2026 BYD Atto 1 recently received a stellar five-star Euro NCAP safety rating, demonstrating its commitment to safety and quality. This rating, achieved against the latest 2025 assessment criteria, bodes well for the Atto 1’s safety performance in Australia, as ANCAP’s criteria closely align with those of its European counterpart.

Known as the Dolphin Surf in Europe and the UK, the Atto 1 impressed with an 82% score for adult occupant protection, 86% for child occupant protection, 76% for vulnerable road user protection, and 77% for safety assist systems performance.

Should the Atto 1 replicate these impressive scores in ANCAP testing, it will join the elite ranks of five-star rated hatchbacks in the light-car segment in Australia. With competitors like the Mazda 2, Suzuki Swift, and MG 3 trailing behind in safety ratings, the Atto 1 is poised to set a new standard for safety in its class.

In the premium light passenger car category, models like the Skoda Fabia and Volkswagen Polo have already secured five-star ANCAP ratings, further underscoring the importance of safety in this segment.

While the Hyundai Inster EV presents a formidable competitor in the light SUV segment, the Atto 1’s superior safety credentials position it as a standout choice for environmentally conscious consumers. With a four-star rating under ANCAP and Euro NCAP’s latest criteria, the Inster EV falls short of the Atto 1’s impressive safety standards.
