Jeff Bezos Reveals Details About Project Prometheus in CNBC Interview

Jeff Bezos during a CNBC Squawk Box interview at Blue Origin’s Rocket Park in Merritt Island, Fla., on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Jeff Bezos provided new insights into Project Prometheus, his secretive startup venture. Contrary to previous speculations, Bezos clarified that the project is not focused on robotics but is instead developing an “artificial general engineer” for designing physical objects.

Describing Prometheus as a modern version of computer-aided design (CAD), Bezos emphasized that the company’s primary goal is to create next-generation tools to aid in the engineering process. He expressed his excitement for the project, revealing that he has dedicated significant time and energy to its development as co-CEO.

Bezos highlighted the potential impact of Prometheus’s tools on companies like Blue Origin, his space venture, while affirming that the startup deserves its own distinct identity and focus. With an initial funding of $6.2 billion and recent investments totaling $10 billion, Project Prometheus has attracted attention for its innovative approach to design and engineering.

The company boasts a team of 120 employees, recruited from renowned tech firms such as OpenAI, DeepMind, Meta, and xAI, and operates across multiple locations including San Francisco, London, and Zurich. Despite initial perceptions of focusing on robotics and manufacturing automation, Bezos’s recent comments shed light on Prometheus’s true mission of revolutionizing design tools for physical objects.
