Spider-Noir review: a pulpy joke taken too far

Exploring Amazon’s New Live-Action Spider-Noir Series

The charm of the Spider-Verse franchise lies in its ability to introduce audiences to a plethora of lesser-known Spider characters, such as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Ham, and Spider-Man Noir. Sony’s latest venture, the live-action Spider-Noir series on Amazon, attempts to capture this magic by focusing on Ben Reilly, also known as “The Spider,” a vigilante turned private investigator in a crime-ridden New York City.

The series, while aesthetically pleasing with its homage to Golden Age crime dramas, falls short in terms of narrative depth. Unlike the original Spider-Man: Noir comics, Spider-Noir struggles to find its unique voice, relying heavily on classic Spider-Man tropes that have been overused in previous adaptations. The show’s attempt at humor often comes across as cheesy, detracting from its noir-inspired premise.

While Nicolas Cage’s portrayal of Spider-Man Noir in the animated films brought a certain energy, the live-action adaptation fails to fully capture the essence of the character. Cage’s performance as Ben Reilly feels disjointed, with moments of forced humor overshadowing the character’s more contemplative aspects. The lack of emotional depth in the series leaves Reilly feeling like a haphazard collection of ideas rather than a fully developed character.

Despite its visually stunning presentation and Cage’s enthusiastic portrayal, Spider-Noir ultimately falls short of delivering a compelling viewing experience. The show’s reliance on outdated storytelling elements and lack of thematic substance indicate a missed opportunity for Sony to build on the success of its previous Spider-Man projects. It serves as a cautionary tale of learning the wrong lessons from past achievements.

Spider-Noir features a talented cast, including Lamorne Morris, Abraham Popoola, Lukas Haas, Andrew Lewis Caldwell, and Jack Mikesell. The series premieres on MGM Plus on May 25th and on Amazon Prime on May 27th, offering audiences a glimpse into Sony’s latest foray into the Spider-Verse universe.
