Exploring BMW’s Armored Vehicle Lineup

  • The Czech Republic hosted the third annual BMW Protection Driving Experience, showcasing armored cars based on the 7 Series and X5.
  • Regular versions of the 7 Series and X5 were also present for comparisons with their armored counterparts.
  • The event featured an M5 Touring and an R 1250 RT motorcycle customized for Czech police use.

Armored vehicles may not be ideal, but in today’s world, high-profile individuals often require protection. BMW has been at the forefront of developing bulletproof cars for almost fifty years. In 2026, their Protection Vehicle division offers the X5 and 7 Series models.

At a private event in the Czech Republic on May 14, BMW showcased the X5 Protection VR6 and the 7 Series/i7 Protection models to 67 guests from eight European countries. Participants had the chance to test these rare vehicles from the UK, Estonia, Denmark, Slovenia, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, and the Czech Republic.

To highlight the differences between armored and standard versions, BMW also provided local dealership models, including the 740d, 750e, X5 40d, X5 50e, and X5 M. Attendees could compare and drive these vehicles back-to-back.

Driving Dynamics Despite the Weight

BMW aimed to show that the 7 Series and X5 maintain their driving performance even with added armor weight. Guests participated in tests like high-speed emergency braking and off-road challenges.

The event took place at the Future Mobility Development Center in Sokolov, where BMW also exhibited an M5 Touring and an R 1250 RT motorcycle tailored for police use.

Looking ahead, BMW plans to introduce armored versions of the 2027 7 Series facelift. The sedan will be available as the G73 with V8 engine options and the electric i7 Protection variant. The fate of the upcoming X5 remains uncertain, but the standard model will see a new generation release soon.

Armored X5 and 7 Series models are custom-built and can include special features like lights, communication systems, fire suppression, run-flat tires, and air filtration. The i7 Protection model weighs an impressive 4,900 kilograms.
