Bill Gates goes to Capitol Hill in Epstein case as his ventures feel the effects – GeekWire

Bill Gates recently provided testimony behind closed doors to the House Oversight Committee regarding his association with Jeffrey Epstein. This development has sparked conversations within the Seattle community, where Gates has significantly contributed to various institutions.

During his testimony, Gates revealed that he first met Epstein in 2011 with the intention of raising funds for global health initiatives. However, he cut off all contact with Epstein by late 2014, acknowledging that meeting him was a mistake that jeopardized his philanthropic work.

Gates expressed regret for lending credibility to Epstein through their interactions and emphasized the importance of being cautious about the individuals he associates with. He also addressed Epstein’s attempt to use information about Gates’ marital infidelity as leverage, which was unsuccessful.

While Gates admitted to having affairs with Russian women, he maintains that he did not witness or participate in any illegal activities conducted by Epstein. He is fully cooperative with the Committee’s inquiries and is committed to supporting their investigation.

The Gates Foundation, under Gates’ leadership, initiated an external review of its past engagement with Epstein and implemented stricter vetting processes for future partnerships. The foundation expressed regret for any employee interactions with Epstein.

Additionally, TerraPower, a nuclear energy company founded by Gates, held discussions regarding Epstein’s connections to Gates and Nathan Myhrvold. Breakthrough Energy, Gates’ climate-investment firm, faced challenges in raising funds due to investor concerns related to Epstein.

Despite the controversy, Gates remains focused on his philanthropic endeavors. He did not attend Microsoft’s CEO Summit this year, but plans to participate in future events. Gates’ appearance before the Committee was a transcribed interview, and a public transcript will be made available.
