Blacksmith’s Rapid Valuation Surge: A 10x Increase in Under a Year
Blacksmith Raises $45 Million in Series B Funding
With the rapid advancement of AI in coding, software development faces a new challenge in testing and validating vast amounts of code. Blacksmith, a tech startup, has secured a new $45 million round of funding to leverage this emerging trend.
The Series B funding round, spearheaded by Peak XV Partners, has valued Blacksmith at $550 million. This is a significant increase from its previous valuation of $60 million when it raised $10 million in Series A funding less than a year ago. Noteworthy investors such as GV and Y Combinator also participated in this round, bringing Blacksmith’s total funding to $58.5 million.
Established in 2024, Blacksmith specializes in assisting companies in building, testing, and validating software before deployment. The startup has seen a remarkable growth in its customer base, now serving over 5,000 clients including Mercury, Supabase, Clerk, Ashby, and Expensify. This marks a substantial increase from the 700 customers they had less than a year ago, according to co-founder and CEO Aditya Jayaprakash.
While AI-powered coding tools like Cursor, OpenAI’s Codex, and Anthropic’s Claude Code have simplified the process of generating code, ensuring the quality of AI-generated code remains a critical issue.
Jayaprakash highlighted the importance of validating code, emphasizing that it continues to be a bottleneck in the software development process, especially with the surge in code production.
Initially focused on providing cloud services for continuous integration workloads, Blacksmith has expanded its offerings with Codesmith, an AI coding agent designed to automatically rectify failed code checks.
Despite achieving a $10 million annualized revenue run rate with only 10 employees, Blacksmith has since expanded its team to around 30 individuals and increased its revenue to “tens of millions of dollars.” Jayaprakash revealed that some of their largest clients now invest over $1 million annually in the platform.
However, Blacksmith faces stiff competition in the market, contending with rivals such as GitHub Actions, Cursor Automations, and validation features integrated into Codex and Claude Code. The startup also competes with various other AI code-testing services offered by tech giants like Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
Jayaprakash emphasized that Blacksmith differentiates itself by focusing on the speed and affordability of code testing.
Looking to the future, Blacksmith plans to diversify its suite of coding tools to assist developers in writing, validating, and merging software more efficiently.
