Apple Intelligence was introduced two years ago, but China, one of Apple’s major markets, has yet to join the party. The expansion of Apple’s new AI features from the US to other English-speaking regions faced hurdles due to unique regulatory requirements in China.

The challenge stemmed from Beijing’s insistence that large language models (LLMs) on Chinese iPhones must be free from foreign influence. This prompted Apple to seek a Chinese AI partner to co-develop its LLMs, as extensions like ChatGPT were not viable options.

Although Apple overcame this obstacle by partnering with Alibaba and securing approval to proceed in China, the journey to launch Apple Intelligence in the country presented new challenges. Apple had to train a new LLM specifically for China, deviating from using an off-the-shelf model from Alibaba.

Apple’s preference for controlling the user experience led to the development of its own LLM, aligning with its strategy to offer a unique AI model in China. This approach could make Apple the first foreign company to receive approval for a proprietary AI model in the country.

There are speculations that Alibaba’s Qwen model will play a role in Apple Intelligence for China, potentially serving as the equivalent of the ChatGPT extension. The incorporation of Qwen frameworks may aid in building Apple’s LLMs, similar to the strategy employed with Gemini in other regions.

Despite government approval paving the way for Apple Intelligence’s launch in China, the actual release date remains uncertain. It could debut in the upcoming iOS 27.0 update or face delays, similar to the initial rollout of Apple Intelligence features in previous versions.

Contrary to expectations, Apple opted to develop a new LLM for China instead of using an existing model from Alibaba. This decision reflects Apple’s commitment to crafting a unique AI experience and could set a precedent for foreign companies seeking to introduce proprietary AI models in China.

The potential integration of Alibaba’s Qwen model and Apple’s efforts to build its LLMs signify a significant step towards launching Apple Intelligence in China. The collaboration with Alibaba and the development of a tailored LLM demonstrate Apple’s dedication to providing innovative AI solutions tailored to the Chinese market.

As the complexities of finalizing the necessary components persist, the launch of Apple Intelligence in China may face delays. However, with government approval in place, the highly anticipated AI features could soon become accessible to Chinese users.
