The Open Championship Finds a Home on Apple TV in the US
Apple is actively exploring opportunities to expand its live sports streaming services, with reports indicating that The Open Championship, one of the oldest and most prestigious golf tournaments globally, may be its next target.
The Guardian has reported that Apple is in early discussions with the R&A, the organizing body of the event and a key figure in global golf governance, regarding the US rights for The Open. While the current rights are held by NBC until 2028, Apple is showing interest in bidding when the opportunity arises.
NBC secured the US rights in 2017, defeating ESPN in a twelve-year deal, and shares them with Versant, the company behind the Golf Channel. Despite Apple’s interest, the R&A remains committed to its partnership with NBC and Versant for the time being.
The R&A expressed satisfaction with its current partnership with NBC and Versant, indicating that discussions about the US media rights will be held with the incumbents in due course. The organization will also monitor the broadcast landscape and interest in its rights.

While concrete negotiations may still be in the future, Apple’s track record in securing sports deals, such as with MLS and Formula 1, showcases its potential to make a significant impact in the sports streaming industry.
Apple’s recent partnerships with MLS and Formula 1 have demonstrated its commitment to providing comprehensive sports coverage to its subscribers, hinting at a potential strategy for The Open if it secures the US rights.
With its successful MLS and Formula 1 deals, Apple has shown a willingness to adapt its approach to fit the evolving sports broadcasting landscape, a trait that could prove advantageous in securing rights to The Open.
Apple’s previous successes in securing sports rights, coupled with its financial resources and extensive streaming reach, position it as a formidable contender for The Open rights, despite potential competition from other streaming giants like Netflix and Amazon.
The speculation surrounding Apple’s interest in The Open highlights the company’s ongoing efforts to diversify its sports streaming portfolio and attract a broader audience through exclusive and high-profile sports content.
