BMW Issues Recall for 13 X3s Due to Steering Spindle Defect
BMW Steering Spindle Recall: A Detailed Look
BMW has recently issued a recall for a specific issue related to the steering spindle in some of its vehicles. This recall was initiated following a single complaint from a customer outside the U.S. who reported that the steering wheel on their 2025 X3 could be turned with minimal effort.
The investigation into this issue began on July 15, 2026, when a non-U.S. customer raised concerns about the steering wheel feeling unusually light and lacking the expected resistance. Despite initial inspections showing no damage to the steering system, further analysis revealed a deviation in the production process that could lead to the steering spindle being out of specification.
Upon reviewing assembly and production records, BMW identified 13 vehicles built between August 7, 2023, and February 7, 2026, that were affected by this issue. The company promptly decided to issue a recall on August 5, 2026, to address the problem.
The specific failure mode identified in the affected vehicles allows the driver to turn the steering wheel without applying enough torque to actually turn the wheels. This poses a potential safety risk as the driver may not immediately realize that the car is not responding as expected.
As a precautionary measure, BMW has advised owners not to drive the affected vehicles and to park them outside rather than in a garage. Dealers will inspect the spindle-to-column connection and replace the necessary hardware free of charge. If required, the entire spindle and column will be replaced.
Dealer notifications were sent out on August 12, 2026, with owner notification letters scheduled to be dispatched via First Class mail on October 2, 2026. The recall covers specific models including the X3 sDrive30i, X3 30 xDrive, and the X3 M50 xDrive.
It is important for affected BMW owners to stay informed about this recall and take the necessary steps to ensure their safety and the proper functioning of their vehicles. BMW is committed to addressing this issue promptly and ensuring the well-being of its customers.
