Google Explores Paid Partnerships with Publishers for AI-Driven Search Results
Google has recently initiated a trial initiative where it compensates publishers for their contributions to its AI-driven search capabilities, as detailed in a report by The Information. This pilot program involves approximately 100 publishers and comes amidst Google facing scrutiny regarding the influence of its AI features on web traffic.
Initially disclosed by Digiday, the pilot program commenced less than twelve months ago. Under this trial, Google is compensating participating publishers based on the impact of their content on AI Overviews, AI Mode in Search, and the Gemini chatbot. According to The Information, one publisher earned over $1 million within a year of program initiation, while another, which joined more recently, has garnered between $50,000 to $60,000.
