Reimagining Carrie: A Modern Take on a Classic Horror Tale

When considering a new adaptation of Stephen King’s iconic novel Carrie, one cannot help but question the necessity of revisiting such a timeless story. The original film, directed by Brian De Palma and starring Sissy Spacek, set a high standard that subsequent adaptations have struggled to match. However, Mike Flanagan’s new Carrie series on Prime Video successfully justifies its existence by capturing the essence of the original while updating it for a modern audience.

Flanagan, known for his work on King adaptations and horror series, brings a fresh perspective to Carrie. His experience with projects like The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep and Netflix shows such as The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass has established him as a master of the genre. With Amazon’s exclusive TV deal, Flanagan’s vision for Carrie marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter in his career.

The series introduces viewers to Carietta White (played by Summer H. Howell), a sheltered teenager thrust into the spotlight after the death of her father. As she navigates the challenges of high school for the first time, Carrie’s story unfolds in familiar yet compelling ways. From the infamous shower scene to the climactic prom night, key moments from the original tale are faithfully recreated.

However, the series goes beyond a simple retelling, expanding on the narrative over eight episodes. One of the most notable updates is the incorporation of technology, with Carrie’s humiliation in gym class going viral on social media. The creation of an anonymous Instagram account dedicated to bullying her adds a modern twist to the story, highlighting the insidious nature of cyberbullying.

Flanagan’s penchant for exploring contemporary issues through the lens of classic horror is evident in Carrie. The show delves into the dark realities of high school life, where cyberbullying can have devastating consequences that extend beyond the school walls. Carrie’s journey from innocence to vengeance is a poignant reflection of the challenges faced by many young people today.

While the series fleshes out supporting characters like Carrie’s mother, Margaret (played by Samantha Sloyan), and her main antagonist, Chris Hargensen (portrayed by Alison Thornton), it also introduces new elements that add depth to their motivations. The stellar cast brings these characters to life, making them more nuanced and relatable than in previous versions.

Despite its many strengths, Carrie is not without its flaws. The series’ attempts to connect Carrie’s powers to the broader Stephen King universe feel forced and detract from the story’s core themes. A heavy-handed approach to tying in supernatural elements ultimately diminishes Carrie’s agency and impact.

Nevertheless, Carrie succeeds in justifying its existence by offering a compelling retelling of a classic tale while addressing relevant contemporary issues. The modern twists and social commentary enhance the story’s darkness and make it a chilling experience for audiences new and old.

All episodes of Carrie will be streaming on Prime Video on October 7th.
