BMW’s Cutting-Edge Battery Plant Fuels the Electric Revolution for the 3 Series
i3
The BMW Group has inaugurated its cutting-edge €1 billion battery facility in Bavaria, where it manufactures Gen6 batteries for the latest BMW electric vehicles. The facility in Bavaria is a crucial part of the production process for BMW’s new i3 sedan, with plans to introduce the i3 wagon next year in Munich.
Article Summary
- BMW has officially launched its Irlbach-Straßkirchen battery plant in Bavaria, commencing series production.
- The plant specializes in building sixth-generation high-voltage batteries equipped with cylindrical cells for BMW’s upcoming electric vehicle lineup.
- With a workforce of approximately 1,600 employees, the plant aims to produce hundreds of batteries daily once fully operational.
BMW has opened the new Irlbach-Straßkirchen battery plant in Bavaria, signaling the start of series production essential for the upcoming Neue Klasse models. The initial beneficiary of this state-of-the-art facility is the latest i3 sedan.
The facility, with an investment of around €1 billion, is now manufacturing sixth-generation high-voltage batteries for BMW’s German production sites. The first set of batteries is on its way to Munich for installation in the newly launched i3 sedan. Production at the battery plant has already commenced with two shifts to meet the high demand for Neue Klasse models. The plant is expected to assemble multiple battery packs daily at full capacity.
The batteries have a short journey from Irlbach-Straßkirchen to Munich, ensuring key components of the i3 are sourced locally. This strategy, known as “local for local,” extends beyond the battery production to include the Gen6 electric motor from Austria and the motor housing from Landshut.
Collaboration Between BMW Employees and Robots
The Irlbach-Straßkirchen facility is not just a storage space; it employs around 1,600 workers and 500 robots. With real-time monitoring of over 3,500 data points for each battery, AI assistants play a crucial role in maintaining BMW’s zero-defect production target.
The batteries utilize sixth-generation technology with a cell-to-pack design, integrating cylindrical cells directly into the battery pack. Additionally, the battery contributes to the vehicle’s structure through a pack-to-open-body concept.
The new site in Irlbach-Straßkirchen is responsible for manufacturing the electric 3 Series sedan’s 108.7-kWh battery, providing a remarkable range of up to 912 km on a single charge for the most efficient i3 50 xDrive version. BMW also offers a more affordable i3 40 xDrive with an 82.8-kWh pack, delivering a range of 710 kilometers on a full charge.
BMW’s Eco-Friendly Battery Approach
The Gen6 cells used in the i3 batteries incorporate recycled materials for their cobalt, lithium, and nickel components. BMW emphasizes the use of renewable energy in producing the battery components, resulting in a 33% reduction in the CO₂e footprint per watt-hour compared to the previous generation. While the i4 will continue with Gen5 cells for now, it is set to be phased out along with the 2 Series Active Tourer, as BMW focuses on newer models.
Irlbach-Straßkirchen is part of BMW’s global strategy, with five new battery assembly facilities strategically located near vehicle plants worldwide. This strategy aims to streamline production by manufacturing batteries in close proximity to the vehicle assembly lines.
Although the new i3 is assembled in Munich, its primary power source hails from the state-of-the-art facility in Bavaria. The batteries produced here will soon find their way into other Neue Klasse models, with the i3 Touring expected to enter production alongside the sedan next year.
