Sofi Filtration Secures €900k Investment from EIT RawMaterials

Sofi Filtration, a CleanTech company based in Espoo and led by women, has recently announced a significant milestone in its growth journey. The company has successfully raised a €900k investment from EIT RawMaterials, a move aimed at accelerating industrial pilots, expanding internationally, and further developing and validating its innovative ultrasound-based water filtration technology.

The investment comprises €600k from the EIT RawMaterials ‘ERMA Booster’ program and €300k from its ‘Fast Track’ program. Apart from financial support, EIT RawMaterials also offers startup support services such as entrepreneurship coaching, financial guidance, and management advisory services.

Expressing gratitude for the backing received, Riina Salmimies, the CEO of Sofi Filtration, emphasized the importance of EIT RawMaterials’ support in advancing the company’s commercialization efforts. The investment will enable Sofi Filtration to strengthen its team, establish partnerships, and expand into new markets across Europe, Türkiye, and potentially North America.

While Sofi Filtration’s investment may seem smaller in comparison to other CleanTech startups like Resilico and UP Catalyst, it holds strategic significance. The funding will support the company’s industrial pilots, international expansion, and ongoing development of its ultrasound-based filtration technology tailored for mining side-streams.

Furthermore, the 2025 funding landscape in Europe has seen a moderate yet tangible flow of investments into ventures focusing on resource efficiency, waste valorization, and critical raw materials resilience. Sofi Filtration, as a Finnish company, stands out within this segment by addressing circular-economy challenges from a Nordic perspective.

Bernd Schäfer, CEO and Managing Director of EIT RawMaterials, highlighted the importance of supporting technology pioneers like Sofi Filtration to accelerate circularity, reduce water usage, and enhance Europe’s security of supply for critical raw materials.

Driving Innovation in Water Filtration

Established in 2011, Sofi Filtration specializes in providing ultra-fine particle filtration for mineral recovery and industrial process water cleaning. The company’s flagship product, Sofi Prima, has been successful in the market, leading to the introduction of a new business line, Sofi Alchemist.

Sofi Alchemist leverages the proven technology platform of Sofi Prima to recover critical minerals from mining concentration plant side streams. The innovative filter system combines ultrasound-powered self-cleaning with the ability to capture ultra-fine particles, resulting in up to 20% higher recovery of critical minerals from existing mines.

The deployment of Sofi Filtration’s system at Finnish battery chemicals producer Terrafame marks a significant milestone in the company’s scaling journey. The technology’s application in nickel sulphate production at the Sotkamo plant demonstrates its value in strengthening Europe’s battery materials value chain.

The recent EIT RawMaterials investment builds on Sofi Filtration’s earlier €1 million financing round, positioning the company to meet the growing demand for critical raw materials in the green transition era.

Future Outlook

As Sofi Alchemist continues to play a pivotal role in securing sustainable mineral supplies for the future, the company remains committed to driving innovation, resource efficiency, and environmental sustainability in the mining and processing industries.

With a proven track record in water treatment across various sectors and a focus on advancing European leadership in resource efficiency, Sofi Filtration is poised to make a lasting impact on the CleanTech landscape.
