EU’s €623m Investment Sparks Growth in German Semiconductor Industry
The European Commission’s Approval of Germany’s Semiconductor Investment Plan
The European Commission has recently given its approval to Germany’s plan to inject €623m into two cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing projects. This strategic move aims to enhance Europe’s technological resilience and decrease its reliance on global chip suppliers.
Supporting Semiconductor Innovation in Europe
The sanctioned funding will facilitate the establishment of new facilities by GlobalFoundries in Dresden and X-FAB in Erfurt. These facilities are slated to play pivotal roles in the EU’s long-term semiconductor strategy as outlined in the European Chips Act.
Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President for Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that open foundries are crucial for fostering competition and innovation in Europe’s semiconductor sector. The creation of these new facilities will help reduce Europe’s dependence on external foundries and bolster the resilience of the continent’s industry.
GlobalFoundries’ Groundbreaking SPRINT Project
A substantial portion of the investment, amounting to €495m, has been earmarked for GlobalFoundries’ ambitious SPRINT project. The company, renowned for manufacturing chips for external clients, is set to expand its 300-millimeter wafer capacity in Dresden.
The unique aspect of the SPRINT project lies in its focus on technologies initially developed under the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) for microelectronics. These technologies will be adapted for dual-use applications, catering to both civilian and defense requirements.
The Dresden expansion will introduce a semiconductor manufacturing process that is unprecedented in the EU, contributing significantly to Europe’s quest for a secure, autonomous chip supply chain.
X-FAB’s MEMS-Focused Foundry in Erfurt
The Commission has also approved €128m in support for X-FAB’s Fab4Micro project in Erfurt. X-FAB intends to construct an open foundry dedicated to micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) alongside advanced packaging and integration capabilities.
These technologies are essential for industries experiencing rapid growth, including automotive innovation, artificial intelligence hardware, and medical devices. The open foundry in Erfurt will provide manufacturing services to fabless chip companies across Europe, offering a competitive alternative to non-EU partners.
By combining MEMS capabilities with advanced packaging technologies, X-FAB’s facility in Erfurt will be the first of its kind in Europe, enhancing the region’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.
Promoting Skills, Innovation, and Supply Security
Both GlobalFoundries and X-FAB have committed to various obligations to maximize the impact of the public investment. They will support innovation pipelines, enhance training initiatives, and prioritize manufacturing capacity during supply crises.
Additionally, the companies aim to obtain designation as Open EU Foundries, promoting accessibility for European industry. This initiative aligns with the EU’s objective of fostering a robust semiconductor ecosystem.
These two projects represent a significant advancement for Europe’s semiconductor manufacturing ambitions, reinforcing the continent’s journey towards greater technological sovereignty.
