Enhancements to Google Home for Improved Smart Home Camera Accuracy

Google has announced a new update for Google Home that aims to reduce the likelihood of smart home cameras mistaking individuals for someone else, especially when they are facing away from the camera. Commencing on June 23rd, Google is expanding its facial recognition feature to ensure that individuals tagged in the Familiar Faces library can still be identified even when their faces are not clearly visible. This will be achieved through the utilization of additional non-biometric signals such as body size and clothing color.

Furthermore, the Familiar Faces library will now automatically update with the most recent images of individuals residing in your household. This update aims to minimize inaccurate notifications stemming from outdated examples.

In addition, Google has enhanced its AI-generated video event descriptions to identify specific sounds such as dogs barking, alarms, or footsteps. These sounds can now be included in the event notes even if the audio source is off-camera. These improvements are designed to address issues highlighted by Jennifer Pattison Tuohy from The Verge regarding Google’s smart home system, including detailed event logs of individuals not present and occurrences that did not occur.
