Revitalizing Zoox: The Evolution of a Purpose-Built Robotaxi
Zoox Unveils Next Evolution of Autonomous Vehicle
Zoox, a company owned by Amazon that focuses on autonomous vehicles, has introduced a new design for its robotaxi, describing it as the “next evolution” of the vehicle aimed at mass production. Currently offering a free robotaxi service in San Francisco, Las Vegas, Austin, and Miami, Zoox is awaiting government approval for an exemption from traditional safety regulations that mandate production vehicles to have standard controls like steering wheels and pedals.
Zoox’s Unique Approach to Robotaxi Design
Unlike other robotaxi operators that use vehicles from established brands, Zoox stands out with its purpose-built robotaxi designed solely for autonomy. The focus on passenger experience rather than driver controls means the vehicle lacks traditional features like steering wheels and pedals. With a carriage-style cabin featuring two facing bench seats for a social setting, the symmetrical design allows the vehicle to move bidirectionally without the need for a 180-degree turn.
Enhancements for Rider Comfort
Zoox has made improvements to enhance rider comfort, including a brighter interior color palette with aloe green seating and stone-grey flooring. The seating now features better padding and ergonomic curves based on feedback from riders. Additionally, the interior touchscreen has been enhanced, the wireless charging pad now offers more stability, and larger cupholders have been added.
Exterior Upgrades and Communication Features
Externally, Zoox has introduced bidirectional reflectors that change colors to indicate the vehicle’s direction. The company has also improved the doors’ interface, adding a new speaker, microphone, and two-way audio capabilities for clearer communication with riders and other road users. These enhancements, though seemingly minor, collectively prepare the vehicle for mass production.
Future Production Plans
While awaiting regulatory approval to begin commercial operations, Zoox plans to start production of the new robotaxi model at its facility in Hayward, California. The facility has the capacity to scale up production to 100 vehicles per week, signaling Zoox’s readiness to enter the autonomous vehicle market on a larger scale.
