The Mercedes-AMG SL: Embracing Its Grand Tourer Roots

The Mercedes-AMG SL is undergoing a transformation to reconnect with its traditional open-top grand tourer essence, distinguishing itself from the coupe-focused Mercedes-AMG GT.

Set to unveil with a mid-cycle facelift in the upcoming year, the changes transcend mere aesthetics. While sharing similarities in their DNA currently, Mercedes-AMG is steering towards enhancing comfort and refinement, drawing inspiration from the well-received Maybach SL’s opulence.

The interior updates align the SL with Mercedes’ cutting-edge technological advancements. Anticipate a revamped cabin showcasing the brand’s latest MB.OS infotainment system, coupled with a more dynamic central display. Subtle enhancements in materials and finishes aim to elevate the luxury quotient, while a redesigned steering wheel and an updated interface promise enhanced driving intuitiveness.

The revamp extends to the engine realm significantly. An all-encompassing shift towards mild hybrid technology is imminent. The departure of the entry-level SL 43 with its 4-cylinder engine paves the way for the introduction of the new SL 53, driven by a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six generating approximately 449 bhp. Moreover, the higher-tier V8 models are evolving with flat-plane crankshafts for enhanced efficiency and compliance with stringent Euro 7 emission regulations.

Despite the transition, power remains uncompromised. Projections indicate that the SL 55 will exceed 530 bhp, while the SL 63 could reach close to 650 bhp. A range-topping Maybach variant is poised to claim the pinnacle spot.
