Rear-Wheel-Drive Luxury SUV: The 2027 BMW X5 40

Rare as hen’s teeth, rear-wheel-drive luxury SUVs are a niche market. Surprisingly, the new 2027 BMW X5 is one of them. While the first two generations of the X5 were exclusively xDrive models, the G05 introduced the rear-wheel-drive X5 sDrive40i in 2018. Fast forward to the latest G65, and BMW is still offering a rear-wheel-drive option with the X5 40.

The X5 40 packs a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that delivers a robust 394 hp and 428 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to a new turbocharger, these figures have increased by 19 hp and 45 lb-ft. The engine runs on the Miller cycle for improved efficiency while maintaining performance. The X5 40 can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.1 seconds, making it 0.2 seconds quicker than its predecessor.

Performance and Affordability

Surprisingly, the rear-wheel-drive X5 40 matches the sprint time of its xDrive counterpart, both reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. The X5 40 is expected to be the lightest variant in the lineup, offering agility and efficiency. In the US, the X5 40 is priced at $71,250, making it the most affordable version. Opting for the xDrive variant adds $2,300 to the price, totaling $73,550.

While the X5 40 won’t be available at launch, BMW plans to start deliveries in the first quarter of 2027. This rear-wheel-drive option provides a cost-effective alternative for those who don’t require all-wheel drive.

Future Prospects

BMW’s move towards rear-wheel-drive SUVs extends beyond the X5. Other models like the X3 20 sDrive and the electric iX3 40 also prioritize rear-wheel-drive configurations. The upcoming iX4 and next-generation iX1 are expected to follow suit, catering to a market demand for efficient and dynamic electric SUVs.
