Alfa Romeo Unveils Next-Generation Tonale Successor
Alfa Romeo Teases New Small SUV, Potentially Tonale Replacement
Alfa Romeo has recently released a teaser for a new small SUV, sparking speculation that it could serve as a replacement for the Tonale model. Emanuele Cappellano, head of Stellantis for the enlarged Europe region, hinted at this development in previous statements. While it is likely that the new SUV will succeed the Tonale, there is a possibility that both models will coexist for a period.
The upcoming SUV is referred to by Alfa as a C-segment SUV, indicating that it may carry a different name compared to the Tonale. The teaser image suggests a sleek, coupe-style design for the new model, deviating from the traditional upright SUV appearance of the Tonale.
Based on the STLA Medium platform, the new Alfa Romeo SUV will share its foundation with models like the Peugeot 3008 and 5008 SUVs, the Jeep Compass, and vehicles from DS, Lancia, Opel, and Citroen. The platform’s multi-energy capabilities will enable the SUV to offer various powertrain options, including 48V mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and pure electric drivetrains.
Unlike the new SUV, the Tonale was developed under Fiat Chrysler’s ownership before the merger with PSA Peugeot-Citroen to form Stellantis. It is constructed on the older Small Wide platform, which has roots tracing back to Fiat’s collaboration with GM. In contrast, the new SUV’s design is being overseen by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo in Turin, with a planned launch in the fourth quarter of 2027 at the Melfi factory in southern Italy.
As part of Alfa Romeo’s strategy to target the small car segment, the new SUV will join a lineup that includes a successor to the Giulietta hatch. While the SUV will utilize the STLA Medium platform, the new Giulietta will be based on the STLA One architecture, offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric drivetrain options.
Additionally, Alfa Romeo is working on next-generation models for the Giulia sedan and Stelvio SUV. Originally planned as the brand’s first all-electric models, the Giulia and Stelvio have faced delays due to slower-than-expected EV adoption, prompting the inclusion of combustion-powered variants. The brand is adapting to market demands while maintaining its commitment to innovation and performance.
