The Inside Scoop: BMW’s Explanation for Why the Electric M3 Skips Carbon Fiber
Exploring BMW’s Use of Natural Fiber Composites
- BMW is considering natural fiber composites as a substitute for carbon fiber, with reduced emissions during production.
- Michael Scully, Head of BMW M Design, highlights the similar strength and stiffness of natural fiber compared to carbon fiber.
Carbon fiber has been a staple in high-end performance vehicles for decades, but BMW’s M Concept Neue Klasse is taking a different approach. This concept car is set to utilize natural-fiber composites for key body components, including the front splitter, roof, and rear diffuser. The shift towards natural fiber composites is driven by environmental benefits, with a significant reduction in emissions during production compared to carbon fiber.
In an interview with BMWBLOG, Michael Scully explains that the production process for natural fiber composites generates approximately 40% fewer emissions than traditional carbon fiber, with comparable strength and stiffness. This move towards sustainability is evident in BMW’s commitment to implementing natural fiber composites in future production cars, starting with the M3 ZA0.
BMW’s development of flax-based lightweight components in collaboration with Swiss company Bcomp dates back to the 2019 Formula E season. The company’s focus on lightness and performance is evident in the design of the M Concept Neue Klasse, with a unique weave pattern and semi-matte finish. The application of natural fiber composites in motorsport and production vehicles signifies BMW’s dedication to innovation and sustainability.
BMW’s Future with Natural Fiber Composites
BMW’s partnership with Bcomp has paved the way for the integration of natural fiber composites in upcoming production cars, with the electric M3 leading the charge in 2027. Customers can expect to see natural fiber components in the ZA0 model, showcasing BMW’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
The customization options available with natural fiber composites, such as the iconic M stripes on the roof, highlight BMW’s attention to detail and design. The possibility of different patterns and designs based on the model offers a unique touch to each vehicle, showcasing BMW’s dedication to individuality and innovation.
