Why the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV is a CarExpert Choice winner... again

The Rise of Electrified Utes in Australia

Utes have always been a popular choice among Australian buyers, with diesel power traditionally dominating the segment. However, the landscape is rapidly evolving, with hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and electric (EV) options now available to help reduce fuel consumption for ute owners.

While electrified utes are still outnumbered by their combustion-powered counterparts, the competition in this space has intensified in recent years. The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV has once again emerged as the top choice, winning the Best Electrified Ute title at the 2026 CarExpert Choice Awards.

This marks the second consecutive year that the Cannon Alpha PHEV has claimed this accolade, surpassing competitors like the KGM Musso EV and the BYD Shark 6. The latter introduced a more affordable cab/chassis variant and a high-performance 2.0-litre flagship model shortly after the 2026 voting period.

Introduced to the Australian market in 2025, the Cannon Alpha PHEV is part of GWM’s flagship ute range, alongside diesel variants. The Lux PHEV is priced at $57,490 drive-away, while the Ultra PHEV comes in at $64,490 drive-away.

Featuring a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and a 37.1kWh battery pack, the PHEV delivers a total system output of 300kW and 750Nm. It boasts a claimed pure-electric range of 115km on the NEDC cycle and a combined fuel consumption of just 1.7L/100km.

Beyond its impressive efficiency figures, the Cannon Alpha PHEV retains a 3500kg braked towing capacity, true 4×4 capability with low-range gearing, and advanced off-road features like locking differentials.

In terms of comfort and luxury, the Cannon Alpha PHEV offers an SUV-like ride and cabin experience. The range-topping Ultra PHEV comes equipped with premium amenities such as Nappa leather-accented trim, heated, ventilated, and massaging front seats – features rarely seen in the Australian ute market.
