The Ultimate Guide to Streaming the World Cup in 4K: UK Edition
The highly anticipated World Cup 2026 is set to commence this week, but fans looking to watch the tournament in 4K may be disappointed by the limited options available.
Despite the advancement of technology in 2026, viewers in the UK can only enjoy the World Cup in Ultra HD through one streaming service – BBC iPlayer. ITVX, on the other hand, is still unable to provide the higher quality viewing experience, contrary to some misleading guides.
To access the 4K streams, viewers will need to utilize the iPlayer app as the BBC does not have a dedicated channel broadcasting in 4K. The BBC will broadcast 54 out of the total 104 matches of the tournament in what they refer to as ‘Ultra HD’ or ‘UHD’.
These 54 matches will include the World Cup final on July 19 (also available on ITV) as well as England’s games in the last 32, last 16, and potentially the semi-final stages of the tournament.
A Guide to Watching World Cup Matches in 4K on BBC iPlayer
To stream the World Cup matches in 4K on BBC iPlayer, viewers will need to follow specific steps as simply tuning into the correct BBC channel via aerial or satellite broadcast will not suffice:
- A compatible 4K TV or streaming device – Major brands like Samsung, LG, Hisense, Roku, Amazon Fire, and others are supported. Ensure your device is on the compatibility list.
- Fast internet connection – The BBC recommends a minimum of 24Mbps for the full 3840 pixel Ultra HD experience, or 12Mbps for lower resolution 2560p streaming.
- A BBC account – Viewers must sign up for a free BBC account if they do not already have one.
- A valid TV license – It is essential to possess a current TV license to legally watch live TV broadcasts.
Once all prerequisites are met, viewers should adjust their iPlayer settings to ‘Best Quality’ and lookout for the UHD icons on the World Cup streams.

When selecting a match, viewers may be presented with various quality options; it is advised to choose Ultra HD for the best viewing experience. For HDR viewing, ensure your TV supports HLG (hybrid log gamma), the standard used by iPlayer, to enjoy enhanced visuals.
It is important to note that while the source feed is in HD, watching World Cup matches on iPlayer in Ultra HD will involve viewing upscaled content rather than native 4K.
