Outpacing Competitors: How the Elite 13% are Dominating with AI Strategies

The Reality of AI Readiness: Insights from Cisco’s Report
It’s no secret that many companies talk a big game when it comes to their AI strategies, but a recent report from Cisco confirms that only a small percentage are truly prepared for the AI revolution. In fact, just 13 percent of organizations globally are considered ‘Pacesetters’ in the AI space, setting them apart as leaders in the field.
What sets these Pacesetters apart? According to the third annual Cisco AI Readiness Index, these top performers are not only more likely to move their AI projects beyond the pilot stage and into real-world applications, but they are also seeing tangible value from their efforts. In fact, they are four times more likely to achieve this compared to their peers.
The key to their success lies in their approach to AI, which involves a strategic, disciplined integration of strategy, infrastructure, and security. This foundation allows them to reap the benefits of AI, with 90 percent of Pacesetters reporting gains in profit, productivity, and innovation, far surpassing the average of 60 percent seen in other organizations.
Jeetu Patel, Cisco’s President and Chief Product Officer, emphasizes the importance of readiness in AI adoption, stating, “This year’s Cisco AI Readiness Index makes one thing clear: AI doesn’t fail, readiness fails.”
So, what’s the secret behind the Pacesetters’ success? The research reveals a consistent pattern among these leaders. They view AI not as a side project, but as a core component of their business strategy. Nearly all of them (99%) have a well-defined AI roadmap, a figure that only 58 percent of other companies can boast. Moreover, 79 percent of Pacesetters prioritize AI as their top investment, a stark comparison to the 24 percent seen in other organizations.
Looking towards the future, the report highlights two significant challenges on the horizon: the widespread adoption of AI agents and the concept of ‘AI Infrastructure Debt’. While 83 percent of companies plan to integrate AI agents into their operations, many are ill-equipped to handle the data volumes and complexity that these systems require. In contrast, the Pacesetters have already taken steps to secure and control these agents effectively.
The concept of ‘AI Infrastructure Debt’ serves as a warning to organizations that neglect the necessary upgrades and investments in AI infrastructure, which could hinder long-term value. As workloads are expected to increase significantly in the coming years, many companies are struggling to organize their data and lack the necessary GPU power to support their AI initiatives.
Ultimately, Cisco’s report underscores the importance of readiness in realizing the full potential of AI. By prioritizing a strong foundation and strategic approach, organizations can set themselves apart in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.
