Google Allows Third-Party App Stores on US Android Devices After Epic Legal Battle

In a significant development following Google’s legal dispute with Epic, US Android users now have the option to access a third-party digital store through the Google Play Store. Aptoide, a mobile game-focused store, is the first to be available for download.

Expansion of Third-Party App Store Access on Android

While third-party app stores have always been accessible on Android due to its more open nature compared to iOS, they were previously limited to pre-installation on devices like the Amazon Appstore on Fire tablets or Samsung’s Galaxy Store, or through sideloading. By now listing rival stores within the Play Store itself, users have easier access to alternative app sources.

Google’s Response to Legal Ruling with Epic

The recent change allowing third-party stores on the Play Store is a direct outcome of Google’s legal battle with Epic. Following a 2024 ruling that mandated the opening of the Play Store to third-party stores, Google initially appealed the decision, leading to a delay in implementation. However, after a failed appeal and subsequent deal with Epic fell through, the pathway for third-party app stores to enter the ecosystem was finally cleared.

Aptoide Leads the Way with More to Come

Aptoide, though relatively unknown, is just the beginning of what is likely to be a wave of alternative app stores entering the Play Store. Expectations are high for other major players like the Epic Store, Amazon, Samsung, and Microsoft’s Xbox mobile store to follow suit and provide their storefronts to Android users.

Global Implications and Future Developments

While Aptoide is currently only accessible through the Play Store in the US, it can be sideloaded on Android devices worldwide. Additionally, with Google’s plans to launch a Registered App Store program worldwide as part of the Epic deal, there may soon be multiple avenues for accessing third-party app stores depending on geographical location.
