Amazon’s Investment in West Texas Data Center Raises Environmental Concerns

Amazon is set to power its new West Texas data center with a new power plant that has raised eyebrows due to its potential environmental impact. The construction of this plant, situated in Pecos County, Texas, could make it one of the largest single producers of greenhouse gases in the United States, as reported by the New York Times. The plan involves utilizing 35 natural-gas turbines to supply 7.65 gigawatts of electricity directly to the data center, bypassing the state’s power grid.

According to data from Cleanview, GW Ranch, the site of the new power plant, has been granted a permit by Texas authorities that allows for the emission of up to 33 million tons of CO2. This amount surpasses the emissions of even the largest coal plant in the country. While it’s uncommon for plants to emit their entire permitted amount of greenhouse gases, the leniency of these pollution levels is concerning. Amazon has acknowledged its involvement in the project and intends to procure power from GW Ranch.

The potential environmental impact of the GW Ranch site poses a challenge to Amazon’s Climate Pledge. CEO Jeff Bezos had committed to making the company carbon neutral by 2040, but the increasing emissions over the past few years, driven by the demands of AI, have raised concerns. Amazon’s spokesperson, Margaret Callahan, emphasized to the New York Times that while the world has changed since the Climate Pledge was initiated, the company’s dedication to its environmental goals remains steadfast.
