Microsoft’s Plans to Bring Xbox 360 Games to PC

Microsoft is expanding its gaming offerings by allowing developers to bring Xbox 360 games to PC. This move comes on the heels of the company’s announcement to bring original Xbox games to PC as well. A leaked document, obtained by The Verge, reveals that Xbox 360 games will be compatible with the next-gen Project Helix console, “Xbox PCs,” and handheld devices.

Building a Broad Xbox Library for Cross-Device Gaming

With the integration of Xbox 360 games into the gaming ecosystem, Microsoft aims to create a more extensive Xbox library that can seamlessly transition between various devices. This strategy aligns with the trend seen on platforms like Steam, where games can be accessed across different devices. Additionally, this move sets the stage for a future without physical game discs, following Sony’s declaration that game discs are becoming obsolete.

Features and Rollout Timeline

Developers will have the option to make Xbox 360 games backward compatible, with control over pricing and availability on services like Game Pass. The rollout of this feature is expected to be gradual, taking place between 2027 and 2028 across next-gen devices. Meanwhile, the full launch of original Xbox games on PC is scheduled for October 2026, following the initial release of four games in July.

Disc-to-Digital Program and Player Benefits

The document also outlines a unique program that allows players to convert their physical game discs into digital licenses. By inserting an Xbox One or Series game disc into a compatible console with a disc drive, players will receive a digital license tied to both the disc and their account. This digital license is transferable between Xbox devices, enabling players to trade or sell physical discs while retaining access to the digital version.

Beta Testing and General Availability

A public beta for the disc-to-digital program was initially planned for July, with general availability slated for August. However, the beta testing phase was delayed, raising uncertainties about the August timeline. Microsoft had intended to involve Xbox Insiders in the testing phase, but the specific details of the rollout remain unclear.

Microsoft’s Gaming Strategy Evolution

These strategic developments in Microsoft’s gaming ecosystem follow a significant reset announced in July, which involved organizational changes, studio acquisitions, and a shift towards digital gaming experiences. The company’s commitment to evolving its gaming offerings underscores its dedication to meeting the changing needs and preferences of gamers worldwide.
