Despite recent collaborations between Apple and Google in sharing AI models, Gemini stands out as an exception in the Apple ecosystem. While Google provides iPhone and iPad apps for its chatbot, it primarily encourages users to access Gemini through a browser, preferably Chrome.

This sets Gemini apart from platforms like Anthropic and OpenAI. OpenAI not only offers a native ChatGPT Mac app but also enjoys deeper integration into macOS through its app and partnership with Apple for ChatGPT extension in Apple Intelligence.

However, this scenario might change soon. According to a report by Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, Google is developing a dedicated Gemini AI app for Mac and has already distributed it to participants in a private beta program.

Alphabet Inc.-owned Google has started sharing an early version of the app with participants in a consumer beta testing program this week. This initiative allows Google to gather feedback on upcoming software from non-employees, who can also assist in identifying bugs before a public release.

The development of the Gemini Mac app seems to be in its initial stages, with beta testers informed that it’s an “early version” containing only critical features from other clients.

Google is expected to add more features to the Gemini Mac app before its release to compete with ChatGPT and Claude, which have an advantage in the Apple ecosystem due to their deeper Mac integration. While Gemini functions well in a browser, native apps have the upper hand in seamlessly integrating with the operating system, offering features like easy photo and document uploads, system-level notifications, quick-access hotkeys, and integration with Apple’s Shortcuts for managing complex workflows.

Sources suggest that Google plans to introduce a feature called “Desktop Intelligence,” enabling Gemini to access other Mac apps and screen content for enhanced data analysis.

According to a message in the app’s code, “Desktop Intelligence” will allow Gemini to utilize screen context and content from other apps to enhance and personalize the user experience while the app is in use.

Despite being a third-party app, Gemini will adhere to macOS’ privacy and security regulations. Even if installed, the app cannot access user data without permission.

Although Apple has partnered with Google to utilize Gemini language models for the upcoming version of Siri, Google’s Gemini app will remain distinct. Apple will leverage Gemini’s capabilities to develop its in-house AI large language models for the next iteration of Siri, known as “Siri 2.0” or project “Campo.”

Apple’s commitment to privacy and security means that user data will remain under its control, with Google unable to access or utilize it for any purpose.

Google’s move to introduce the Gemini app on Mac desktops is crucial, especially before the release of macOS 27. Early adoption by users can potentially lead to continued usage, allowing Google to utilize user data for training its AI models and enhancing its analytical capabilities, even as Siri evolves into a full-featured chatbot.
