Apple’s Latest Innovation: Seamless iPhone-to-Windows Copy-Paste Functionality

The EU’s Digital Markets Act has paved the way for developers and government agencies to collaborate with digital gatekeepers, such as Apple, to ensure interoperability with third-party tools and services. This move has compelled Apple to enhance its features to be compatible with third-party wearables, enabling support for notifications, proximity pairing, and automatic audio switching across various smartwatches and earbuds within the EU.

In March, Microsoft submitted a request to Apple for improved interoperability, citing restrictions on clipboard access on iOS that hinder third-party developers from implementing cross-device copy and paste functionalities with their devices. Microsoft emphasized the need for seamless synchronization of clipboard content between iPhones and PCs or other connected devices, calling for a solution to enable background clipboard sharing.

Apple announced on June 26th its plans to develop a cross-device clipboard solution in response to Microsoft’s request. The tech giant anticipates completing the engineering effort by fall 2027 and will subsequently release it in a developer beta version. Apple acknowledged the need for permission from users to share clipboard content with paired devices and assured that the proposed solution would enable Microsoft to create an extension for sharing and importing pasteboard items with connected accessories.
