The Latest Phase of the EUMaster4HPC Programme: Empowering Europe’s HPC Specialists

The EUMaster4HPC programme has recently embarked on a new chapter, with the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking (EuroHPC JU) unveiling the next stage of its pan-European Master of Science (MSc) initiative dedicated to high-performance computing (HPC).

With nearly €10 million in funding allocated over a six-year period, the programme’s primary goal is to equip numerous students with the advanced technical expertise necessary to meet Europe’s increasing demand for HPC professionals.

This phase of the initiative has broadened its scope to encompass artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing, aligning with the shifting needs of both industry and research sectors.

Applications for the upcoming intake are now open until August 15, 2026, providing graduates with the opportunity to pursue studies across multiple European countries while gaining practical experience at prominent supercomputing centers and industrial organizations.

Fostering Europe’s HPC Workforce

The EUMaster4HPC programme stands out as the inaugural Master’s degree program specifically tailored to deliver a cohesive, pan-European education in high-performance computing.

Endorsed by EuroHPC JU, this initiative brings together universities, research institutions, supercomputing centers, and industry partners to nurture the next generation of experts capable of driving Europe’s digital transformation.

Given the increasing significance of HPC in scientific research, engineering, industrial innovation, and emerging technologies, the programme aims to enhance Europe’s technological competitiveness and address the escalating shortage of skilled professionals.

Graduates will acquire proficiency in operating and scaling HPC systems, while also gaining knowledge that intersects with AI and quantum computing, two pivotal areas poised to propel advancements in computational science.

Collaborative Efforts Across Europe

The most recent phase of the programme will be overseen by the University of Luxembourg, in collaboration with eight other distinguished universities across Europe.

These participating institutions include:

  • Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya
  • Politecnico di Milano
  • Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg
  • Sorbonne University
  • Sofia University
  • AGH University of Krakow
  • VSB – Technical University of Ostrava
  • Freie Universität Berlin

In addition to these universities, 13 other higher education institutions, along with leading European supercomputing centers and industrial partners, are actively involved in this collaborative endeavor.

This extensive collaboration is designed to provide students with access to cutting-edge computing infrastructure, while immersing them in real-world research and commercial applications.

Integrating Academic Learning with Hands-On Experience

Participants in the EUMaster4HPC program will complete up to 120 ECTS credits throughout the duration of the program, combining traditional classroom education with practical internships and industry engagement.

A key feature of this program is its emphasis on international mobility, requiring students to study in at least two different European countries to encourage cross-border cooperation and expose them to diverse research environments and HPC ecosystems.

Internships, workshops led by industry experts, and close collaboration with technology partners are seamlessly integrated into the curriculum, enabling graduates to cultivate practical skills alongside theoretical knowledge, enhancing their employability.

Empowering Europe’s Future in AI and Quantum Computing

This program maintains close ties with the EuroHPC Virtual Academy (EVITA), facilitating the sharing of educational resources among participating institutions and reinforcing collaboration within Europe’s HPC community.

In addition, it collaborates with the European Technology Platform for High-Performance Computing (ETP4HPC) to ensure that the curriculum remains aligned with industry priorities and evolving workforce demands.

Beyond technical training, the initiative includes ongoing curriculum assessments, tracking of graduates, and quality assurance processes to ensure that the program remains pertinent as computing technologies progress.

The consortium has also pledged to enhance diversity within the HPC sector by implementing measures to boost female participation and create a more inclusive learning environment.

By amalgamating academic excellence, international collaboration, and direct industry engagement, EUMaster4HPC aims to cultivate a new cohort of specialists capable of supporting Europe’s aspirations in high-performance computing, AI, and quantum technologies, thereby fortifying the continent’s long-term digital sovereignty.
