Xbox CEO’s Strategic Plan Unveiled: Priorities for the Future
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma Aims to Drive Growth After Major Restructuring
Following a significant overhaul at Xbox that saw layoffs and the spinoff of four studios, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is determined to steer the company back towards growth. In a memo obtained by The Verge, Sharma outlined her plans to return Xbox to player and revenue growth by the end of fiscal year 2027.
Since assuming leadership of Xbox in February, Sharma has implemented sweeping changes to address various challenges faced by the company. These challenges include low accountability margins, rising hardware component costs, an overextended slate of studios, and platform infrastructure ill-equipped for future competition. In addition to structural changes, Xbox has secured console exclusivity for titles like Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution, with more exclusives in the pipeline. Sharma has set an ambitious goal of making Xbox a company that entertains over a billion people daily.
In her recent memo, Sharma outlined four key priorities for Xbox in fiscal year 2027:
CORE: Strengthen the platform, led by the console
CONTENT: Expand successful games into global franchises
CREATION: Develop Minecraft as the premier creator platform
CONNECTION: Enhance fan-favorite worlds
Sharma emphasized that Xbox will assess its progress through three stages, with the first being a return to growth by the end of fiscal year 2027. Subsequent stages involve translating investments into growth and scaling successful strategies to achieve sustained growth and player engagement by fiscal year 2030.
Sharma provided insights into Xbox’s current player base, highlighting its massive reach of over 100 million daily users and nearly one billion yearly users. She underscored the importance of the console as the primary revenue generator for Xbox and its integral role as the flagship experience. Xbox’s OS, Game Pass, Windows, and streaming services are positioned as key platforms for attracting new players and developers.
Xbox is transitioning its studio model from decentralized to a more focused approach centered around core franchises and innovative concepts. Notable changes, such as a significant push for the Fallout franchise, exemplify this shift. Xbox aims to develop long-term plans for its major franchises across various entertainment mediums and explore new global partnerships, including in China. Three Xbox franchises currently generate over $1 billion annually, although specific titles were not disclosed by Sharma.
To expand its presence in casual gaming, Xbox intends to leverage partnerships with King, the creator of Candy Crush, and Microsoft Casual Games. Additionally, Xbox plans to increase investments in Minecraft to capitalize on its potential like never before.
