The Evolution of Cloud Computing: How Agentic AI is Redefining its Purpose
Attending the Google Cloud Summit in London, I anticipated discussions on databases and serverless architecture. Surprisingly, the focus was on agentic AI, with the cloud taking a backseat. Conversations revolved around the shift towards autonomous software and the reevaluation of human vs. AI decision-making processes.
European businesses often view AI as a productivity tool for cost-cutting, missing out on the opportunity to redesign operations with agentic AI. Instead of simply automating existing workflows, organizations should question the necessity of current processes in a world where human limitations no longer apply.
Rethinking Workflows
Deploying AI agents without reevaluating the purpose of existing workflows is a common mistake. Many processes are outdated and built around obsolete constraints. Implementing AI may increase efficiency, but it does not necessarily improve the overall business structure. It is crucial to identify where complexity can be reduced and redesign operating models accordingly.
Shifting Mindsets in Europe
Europe lags behind in AI spending, often due to a technology-first approach that overlooks the core business problems. Successful companies start by addressing business challenges and then determine if AI is the right solution. Strategic ambition plays a significant role in leveraging AI for revenue generation rather than solely focusing on cost-cutting.
Overcoming Legacy Systems
Legacy systems are frequently cited as barriers to digital transformation, particularly in regulated industries like FinTech. While integration challenges exist, using legacy systems as an excuse for inaction hinders progress. Organizations can ring-fence critical infrastructure and build new autonomous models around them to enhance efficiency and client outcomes.
The cloud serves as the foundation for computational infrastructure, while agentic AI reshapes its purpose. Viewing this transition as a mere automation project overlooks the transformative potential of redesigning workflows. Embracing change and redesigning work processes are essential for staying competitive in the evolving business landscape.
